Congress-BJP bhai-bhai? Hmmm...

Is there an understanding between the two parties on critical issues? Illustration: Uttam Ghosh/Rediff.com

Why is that Digvijaya Singh developed cold feet after all the big talk of taking on Narendra Modi in Varanasi?

And why did firebrand Uma Bharti's name not figure against Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli?

Apparently, the bigwigs from opposing ends of the political spectrum are opposed to the idea of titanic battles that have the potential of marring the leaders' entry into the Lok Sabha.

So once Diggy Raja upped the ante, Bharti too talked big. But well-wishers stepped in. Now the Congress has started saying that a local in Varanasi would be more suitable to take on Modi. As if taking a cue, Bharti too settled for Jhansi.

Makes one wonder if Arvind Kejriwal's allegation about tacit ties among sworn enemies like the Congress and BJP on critical issues is true.

Insiders claim an attempt was also made to stop the Smriti Irani versus Rahul Gandhi contest in Amethi, but Modi intervened, insisting that 'Shahzada' remain confined to his constituency instead of fanning out across the country as the Congress's chief campaigner.
