The Association for Democratic Reforms analysed the second list of the Congress and third list of the Bharatiya Janata Party and discovered that political parties have fielded 30 per cent candidates that have criminal cases registered against them.
Out of 92 candidates analysed, 28 candidates (30 per cent) had declared criminal cases against themselves in their previous election affidavit.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has 17 out of 53 candidates (32 per cent) with criminal cases.
The Indian National Congress has 11 out of 39 (28 per cent) candidates with criminal cases.
Twelve candidates (13 per cent) out of 92 analysed had declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their previous election affidavits.
Six out of 53 (11 per cent) BJP candidates and 6 out of 39 (15 per cent) Congress candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
One candidate, Satish Dubey of the BJP from the Valmiki Nagar constituency in Uttar Pradesh, had declared a case of murder in his previous election affidavit.
Two candidates had declared cases of attempt to murder. Ramesh Chand Tomar of the Congress from Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency in UP and the same Satish Dubey of the BJP from Valmiki Nagar had declared a case of attempt to murder against himself.
One candidate, former cricketer Kirti Jha Azad of the BJP from Darbhanga constituency in Bihar, had declared a case related to illegal payments in connection with an election (Indian Penal Code, Section-171H).

Average assets of candidates: The average assets of 92 candidates analysed is Rs 3.18 crore (Rs 31.8 million).
Party-wise average assets: The average assets of 39 Congress candidates is Rs 4.30 crore (Rs 43 million) and the average assets of 53 BJP candidates is Rs 2.36 crore (Rs 23.6 million).
Number of crorepati candidates: Out of 92 candidates, 44 candidates (48 per cent) have declared total assets (self assets + others' assets) of more than Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million).
Party-wise crorepati candidates: 24 out of 39 Congress candidates (62 per cent) and 20 out of 53 (38 per cent) BJP candidates have declared total assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
High asset candidates: Uday Singh from the Purnia constituency in Bihar had declared the highest assets worth, Rs 41.90 crore (Rs 419 million), followed by Pratibha Singh of the Congress from Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh with assets worth Rs 33.96 crore (Rs 339.6 million) and Vincent H Pala of the Congress from the Shillong-ST constituency in Meghalaya with assets worth Rs 25.16 crore (Rs 251.6 million).
Re-contesting MPs: Out of the 92 candidates analysed, 50 candidates are sitting Lok Sabha MPs.
