Speaker Meira Kumar plans massive celebrations of the 60th year of Indian Parliament, on May 13, 2012.
A special session of Parliament is being convened to discuss important issues and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Monday approved a gala function, by inviting foreign signatories to address the session.
The Indian Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950 and following the first general elections from October 25, 1951 to February 21, 1952, the first elected Lok Sabha was constituted on April 17, 1952. The first Lok Sabha met for the first time on May 13, 1952 and was dissolved by the President on April 4, 1957, 38 days earlier than its normal life of five years.
President Prathibha Patil will inaugurate the function, followed by addressed from the vice president and the prime minister. Former speakers, former deputy speakers and erstwhile members of Parliament of Lok Sabha are also likely to be invited.
A special session of Parliament is likely to discuss the Millennium Development Goals and Human Development Index with special speakers.
Kumar constituted a high-level advisory committee with Secretary General T K Viswanathan to draw a plan of three-day celebrations in the Central Hall of Parliament.
A proposal (under consideration) consisting a special postage stamp and a special five-rupee coin is also likely to be released by the prime minister on the 60th year of Indian Parliament proceedings.
