India has lodged a protest with the Malaysian government over the detention of an Indian filmmaker and asked it to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The Indian high commission in Kuala Lumpur has asked the Malaysian government to conduct an inquiry into the incident involving the night-long detention of Sanjeev Mishra by immigration officials at the airport.

Mishra, who was accompanied by a German partner, was accosted by RELA personnel on May 14 night and bundled into a van that was full of Bangladeshis, sources told PTI.

He was not allowed to talk to anybody and was taken to Chowkit detention centre, they said.

In the wee hours of the next day, Mishra was able to talk to one of the local contacts who informed the high commission. He was released in the early morning of May 15.

The high commission has sent a letter to the Malaysian Foreign Ministry protesting the detention.

Voicing concern, the high commission said such incidents would send a wrong signal to Indian tourists who visit Malaysia in large numbers every year.

The Indian government also demanded an inquiry into the incident and steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur, the sources said.

Two years ago, two Indian employees of HCL were also detained in a similar manner and the Malaysian government had assured that such an incident would not recur.
