Terrorists shot at and critically wounded a prominent Communist Party of India-Marxist activist in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Thursday evening.

A senior police officer said the terrorists had forced entry into the house of the CPI-M activist Mohammad Ismail Lone in Manand Gophan village, 72 km from Srinagar in Kulgam district, late on Thursday evening.

"The militants fired at Lone from close range critically injuring him. While fleeing from the spot, they also shot at Lone's nephew Gulzar Ahmad Malik, who had rushed to his uncle's house after hearing gunshots," he said.

Both Lone and his nephew have been taken to Srinagar for treatment.

Reinforcements were rushed to the village to carryout searches, the police said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
