The Delhi high court has rejected a plea for conducting a post mortem on the body of deceased Bahujan Samajwadi Party founder Kanshi Ram.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati had advanced the time of funeral to ensure that even a court order will not thwart her.
Mayawati announced this through a public address system at the party office at 12 Rakabganj Road.
One of Kanshi Ram's sisters filed a petition in the Delhi high court protesting against the Buddhist last rites to be given to him.
Kanshi Ram's body was brought an hour behind schedule to the party office in a glass casket in which the face of the departed leader could be clearly seen. Kanshi Ram's body was wrapped in the tri-colour.
Mayawati had announced that the ashes of Kanshi Ram would not be immersed as per the Hindu religion, but kept in urns at the party offices in Delhi and Lucknow and at his official residence where he beathed his last.
"The last rites of Kanshi Ramji would be performed according to Buddhist religion and his mortal remains would be consigned to fire at Nigambodh Ghat. But his ashes would not be immersed in Ganga or Yamuna. They will be kept in the party offices as well as the official residence for eternity," she said in a written statement that was read out by her to the newsmen.
"I will carry on and try to achieve the goals that were entrusted to me by him on December 15, 2001, when he passed on the baton to me. I pay my respects to the departed soul," Mayawati said.
