February 23, 2007 23:37 IST

President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday called for an action oriented solution to tackle terrorism and spoke about low intensity warfare affecting various parts of the world.

"Presently terrorism and low intensity warfare are affecting many parts of the world," Kalam said and stressed the need for "an action oriented solution for evolving a happy, prosperous planet and enlightened society."

Delivering the convocation address at the Women's Christian College in Chennai on Friday night, the President asked students whether it would be possible to have a safe and prosperous world. The President got a resounding 'yes' as an answer.

Refering to the concept of National Prosperity Index as an indicator of the quality of life of citizens, he said it would comprise three major components -- creation of englightened citizens through education with value system, religion transforming into spiritual force and nations achieving higher NPI.

He asked the students to focus on the mission of transforming the planet into a peaceful, prosperous and happy place to live.

"Development of a conflict-free society will be a major turning point in human evolution. All of you assembled here may relfect how each one of you individually and collectively can contribute in this mission," he said.

The President also distributed awards and prizes to meritorious students.

Presumably impressed with the singing, including the national anthem, by the college students, the President took them by surprise when he called the members of the singing group for a group photograph with him.
