J&K sex racket: CBI team to start fresh probe

October 10, 2007 12:47 IST

Acting on the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigations will arrive in Srinagar on Thursday to initiate a probe against individuals named in the sex racket case.

The eight-member team of the agency, headed by SSP R S Dhankar, will be assisted by a group of state police officials in the investigations.

Expressing surprise over the way the CBI conducted the probe with regard to certain persons named by the victims, the High Court on Monday said that the agency should investigate the two cases registered at Magam police station in Budgam district and Maharaj Gunj police station in Jammu.

The CBI team will investigate both the FIRs during their visit to the city.

The team is expected to question Transport Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen,  Congress MLA Hassan Khan, People's Democratic Party MLA Yogesh Sawhney, Director General (Prisons) Rajinder Tickoo, Deputy Inspector General Niyaz Mehmood, SSPs Ashkoor Wani and Sheikh Mehmood, former Jammu and Kashmir Bank Chairman and Yes Bank vice president M Y Khan, besides Nissar Ahmed Sheikh, a close kin of a  National Conference leader.

The sex racket, which came to light in March last year, rocked the state after the victims named some high profile politicians, security officials, bureaucrats and businessmen.
