Jammu and Kashmir police Thursday presented another chargesheet against the accused in the notorious fake encounters case in the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Srinagar.
Farooq Ahmad, deputy inspector general of police who is heading the Special Investigation Team probing the five fake encounters that were unearthed early this year, said, "Today we have presented another chargesheet in the court on the abduction and subsequent murder of Moulvi Showkat Ahmad Khatana.
"The challan has been presented against H R Parihar, former SSP, Ganderbal, Bahadur Ram, deputy police superintendent, Farooq Ahmad Gudoo, assistant sub-inspector of police, constables Manzoor Malik and Tariq Ahmad Lone, one Moulvi Ashraf and five personnel of 13 Rashtriya Rifles including the battalion's commanding officer."
The five charged personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles were not produced before the CJM as the army has not handed over them to the local police.
Khatana, a resident of Banihal in Jammu served as an Imam in the Alamgiri Bazaar mosque, was picked up from downtown city on October 4, 2006 and was killed as a foreign militant in less than 12 hours at Bazipora (Ajas) in Ganderbal.
The CJM Srinagar after hearing the prosecution case, deferred the committal of the accused to the trial court up to May 3, in order to provide the army a chance to decide whether they would hand over the five Rashtriya Rifles personnel for trial to the civil court or conduct their own court martial proceedings against them.
