Nearly 1080 vehicles were stranded at different places as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for traffic following landslides and fresh snowfall, traffic authorities said on Friday.

Six Border Roads Organisation personnel, involved in road clearance operation, had a narrow escape on Friday when two avalanches hit an arterial road near the highway, a defence spokesman said.

He added that the six personnel have been evacuated to safety. The avalanches hit Shaitani Nallah, 120 km from Srinagar, on Friday afternoon, he said.

Heavy snowfall and rain resulted in a landslide near Nashri and also washed off 30 metres of road near Ramsoo, traffic officials said, adding that the bad weather was obstructing the BRO's clearance work.

About three to four feet of snow had accumulated on the arterial road between Chenani-Patnitop-Nashri till Friday morning. Two feet of snow had accumulated on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel, officials said.
