Two militants were killed while an army major and a trooper were wounded in a ongoing fierce encounter in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. A senior police officer said that the Rashtriya Rifles troops and local police jointly surrounded a house in village Manloo on specific information about the presence of a group of heavily armed militants inside it.

“As the security forces challenged the holed up militants, they opened fire, setting off an encounter in which an army major and a trooper were critically injured. They were evacuated to hospital for treatment,” said the officer.

He said two militants were killed in the ongoing operation.

A poll official was killed and five others wounded when militants ambushed a vehicle carrying poll staff after the conclusion of the voting in Shopian district which is part of the south Kashmir Anantnag constituency on Thursday.
