Terrorists struck in the apple rich Sopore town on Sunday morning killing a special police officer near the main bus stand in the town.

Police said terrorists fired pistol shots from a close range at the SPO identified as Fayaz Ahmad who died on the spot. The area was immediately cordoned and searches were mounted to apprehend the assassins.

A local Lok JanShakti Party leader, Feroze Ahmad who happened to be present near the bus stand, when militants shot and killed the SPO, suffered a massive heart attack.

Efforts to revive him by the doctors in Sopore and in capital Srinagar's hospitals failed as he died on Sunday afternoon. The terrorists had fired two rifle grenades at a security force camp in the town late on Saturday evening. The grenades had exploded without causing any damage.

Meanwhile an army trooper was killed and another wounded in a militant ambush during a search operation in the Rajawar forest area of the Kupwara border district on Sunday.
