First phase of JK panchayat polls ends peacefully

The first phase of the Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir passed off peacefully without any incident on Wednesday. The authorities had made elaborate security arrangements for today's polls during which people exhibited enthusiasm in electing the representatives at the village level.

Wednesday's polls involved election of 288 sarpanches and 2118 panches in eight community development blocks, according to an official spokesman. 

The poll percentage remained 86.2 in Kupwara, 77.87 in Kangan, 72 in Budgam, 77.87 in Quimoh (Main), 77.34 in Quimoh in Kashmir Valley and 80.49 in Udhampur, 82 in Samba and 80 in Bishnah with a total percentage of 80.77 in all the three blocks in Jammu region, the spokesman said.
