The Superintendent of Police of Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore district, Altaf Khan, was on Tuesday shifted in the wake of the death of a youth allegedly in police custody in the north Kashmir town on Sunday.
"In order to ensure fair and impartial investigation into the incident, it was decided to transfer SP, Sopore, with immediate effect," an official spokesman said after a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani to review the ongoing probe into the alleged custodial death of Nazim Rashid Shalla alias Anjum at Sopore.
Khan was replaced by SP, Ganderbal, Imtiyaz Hussain with immediate effect, an official spokesman said.
"During the meeting, it was decided that Deputy Inspector General, North Kashmir Range, Muneer Ahmad Khan, will be the overall in-charge of the ongoing investigation," the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, a group of opposition Peoples Democratic Party legislators who travelled to Sopore to express their condolences to the family Nazim was subjected to heavy stone pelting by an irate mob, prompting security forces to fire teargas and use baton charges.
The mobs shouting anti-India slogans forced the legislators to flee the place under heavy security. Window panes of some vehicles carrying the legislators were shattered.
The town observed a complete shutdown for the third day running. Security in the town continues to be tight with deployments of police and paramilitary troops.
Angry youth pelted stones and forced a shutdown in the adjoining town of Bandipore where security forces used baton charge to disperse the mobs. Hard-line separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a shutdown on Wednesday against the custodial deaths in Sopore.
