J&K cops rescue 100 from landslide-hit village

The Jammu and Kashmir police averted a major tragedy on Tuesday evening, as it rescued over 100 people from their houses hit by landslides in the Chadyan village in the border town of Uri in north Kashmir.

A senior police officer said more landslides may occur in the mountainous village, and all precautions were being taken to avoid damage to life and property.

He said landslides struck the village on Tuesday evening and immediately a massive rescue operation was launched, during which over 100 people including women and children were rescued safely.

The officer said 16 houses and a mosque were damaged after being hit by the landslides in the village.

"We are keeping a constant watch over the situation and rescue teams have been kept ready to meet any eventuality in case more landslides occur," the officer said.

Chadiyan village is located on a mountainous slope and recent heavy rains may have been the factor to trigger the landslides.
