JK: BSF officer remanded in judicial custody

R K Birdi, the Border Security Force (BSF) commanding officer, arrested in connection with the killing of a 17-year-old schoolboy was remanded in 10-day judicial custody on Saturday.

The special investigation team probing the killing of the Zahid Farooq Sheikh didn't press for further police remand and the chief judicial magistrate Srinagar sent Birdi to judicial custody for 10 days.

Birdi was this evening shifted to the high security Srinagar central jail under tight security where he will spent his ten day judicial remand period.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while talking to newsmen said 'this was for the first time in 20 years such a prompt action was taken on a reported incident of human rights violation and all are unanimous that violators of human rights cannot be spared'.

Chief Minister said that AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) would not be used to shield anyone who is involved in human rights violations.
