Militancy connected with jihad and north-east insurgency will be the focus of discussions when top ranking officials from police of the north-eastern states and central forces meet in Guwahati on November 29 and 30.
“The conference will be addressed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the inaugural day and Prime Minister Narendra Modi the next day when the chief ministers of the N-E states and Sikkim will be present,” said Assam’s DGP Khagen Sarma.
The top cop also added that north-east militancy, rising incidents of Maoist violence will be the focus of the meet.
He further elaborated that there will be a separate discussion with Research and Analysis Wing officials that will cover issues related to guarding frontier states.
In the recent past, there has been a rise in the incidents of militancy in Assam and its neighbouring areas such as West Bengal and even the other north-eastern states. For instance, the violence in Burdwan, the recent blast in Assam’s Dibrugarh district and the huge cache of explosives found ahead of Modi’s visit has been a concern for authorities in the area.
Sarma added that in wake of the terror acts perpetrated by militant groups such as ULFA (Independent) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit faction), security measures have been tightened and an alert too has been sounded off in and around Guwahati.
