Jaya hands out Rs 98 lakh to building collapse victims' families

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday gave away a total sum of Rs 98 lakh as relief to families of 14 persons killed in the June 28 building collapse near suburban Porur.

Jayalalithaa gave away a sum of Rs 7 lakh each to the families of 14 labourers hailing from the state who were among the 61 persons killed in the mishap, an official release said.

Later, she also participated in a function to honour the personnel involved in rescue work at the accident site. A total of 27 survivors were pulled out from under the debris. The CM gave away awards and certificates to them in recognition of their services.

Hailing their ‘selfless services, Jayalalithaa lauded the contribution of 3,750 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, police department, Home Guards and the departments of Health, Revenue, Highways, Public Works, Rural Development, and Chennai Metrol Rail Limited besides Chennai Corporation who were involved in the week-long rescue operations.
