There is a proposal to recommend Union Finance Minister Jaswant Singh's name for a medal for his role as external affairs minister during the Kargil crisis.

Senior army officials confirmed that such a proposal was pending with the Army Headquarters.

If the recommendation is made and is accepted by the government, Singh, who served as a Major in the famous Central India Horse Armoured Regiment, will become the only civilian to receive such a honour.

The armed forces honoured the Kargil heroes with two types of medals -- the gallantry awards for expectional bravery and awards for meritorious service in operational planning.

It was not immediately clear what type of medal the finance minister would be honoured with.
