Jammu: Troops detect tunnel near forward post along Indo-Pak border

August 23, 2014 20:31 IST

Army troops during routine patrolling detected a 50-mt long tunnel near a forward post along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu sector's Pallanwala sector, a defence spokesman said on Saturday.

"On Aug 22 (Friday), army personnel deployed in Pallanwala sector found a tunnel approximately 50 metres near the Chakla post on the Indian side of the Line of Control," he said. "The tunnel is approximately two-and-a-half ft wide and three-and-a-half ft high and is leading towards the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir," the spokesman said in a statement.

It appears to be an incomplete tunnel as no exit has been found on the Indian side, he said. "Troops are carrying out thorough search of the area to ascertain further details which is taking time due to the existing minefield," the spokesman said.

Army engineers armed with equipment were working round the clock to uncover the tunnel, reports said. An infiltration bid by armed militants in which an ultra was killed and a jawan lost his life took place in Pallanwala sector on July 22, 2014.

Army troops had also detected a tunnel in same area in 2008.
