Item girls should be called prostitutes: Hindu Mahasabha's shocking statement

Last updated on: December 03, 2014 14:56 IST

Just a day after actress-model Gauhar Khan was slapped for wearing ‘skimpy’ clothes, a Hindu Mahasabha leader has sparked another controversy over his demand that actresses performing item numbers in films should be branded as prostitutes.

The demand was made by the general secretary of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Hindu Mahasabha Navin Tyagi. “The girls who perform item numbers in films and remove clothes should be declared prostitutes. We feel the women who earn money by indulging in obscenity are prostitutes. They are spreading filth in society,” Tyagi said, adding he will take the matter to the Supreme Court.

Tyagi is the same man who had sought a ban on wearing of skirts and jeans by girl students in schools and said they should not be allowed to carry mobile phones.

Criticism came in from all corners after Tyagi issued the statement with the National Commission for Women condemning the remark and calling it regressive.
