'IS possesses enough arms to wage war up to 2 years'

November 19, 2014 11:51 IST

A new United Nations report warns that the Islamic State militant group possesses enough arms, ammunition and vehicles to wage its war in Iraq and Syria for up to 2 years.

According to the Guardian, the size of IS' weapon store provides the group with durable mobility, range and a restricted defence against low-lying aircraft.

The UN report said that even if the US led coalition airstrikes destroy the group's vehicles and heavy weapons, it cannot lessen the effect of the significant volume of light weapons.

The report warns that the IS is not only the world's wealthiest terrorist group but also the best armed.

The report recommends that the UN should take steps to cut off IS' access to money and guns.
