Two Indian Embassy officials have left for the Louisiana State University, where two Indian doctoral students were killed on Thursday night, to assist the police and institute authorities.

"Consul K P Pillai from the Consulate General (Houston) and First Secretary Alok Pande from the Embassy of India are being dispatched to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, today to establish contact with the University authorities, Police Department and the Indian American Community to render all possible assistance," the Indian Embassy in Washington said in a statement.

Expressing deep sorrow over the death of the two students, the statement said, "As soon as we were made aware of this heinous crime, the Consulate General of India in Houston established contact with the Louisiana State University to ascertain more details".

India's Ambassador to the US Ronen Sen has conveyed his deepest condolences to the family members of the victims and hoped that the culprits would be booked and brought to justice.

Appropriate meetings for the diplomats have been fixed for Saturday.
