A young Indian-American at Florida State University has received a major grant from National Science Foundation for his research in the computer science.

Piyush Kumar, an assistant professor in department of computer science of the University in Tallahassee, Florida, will receive $400,000 over a five-year period.

Kumar is pursuing research on the design, analysis and implementation of algorithms for geometric problems, particularly problems with applications in areas such as pattern recognition, machine learning, and optimisation and computer graphics.

His work, according to the University, involves designing efficient methods to solve problems that are both theoretically appealing and practical.

Among other things, Kumar's research on surface reconstruction is of key importance for users of this technology, including automotive, aircraft, aerospace, movie, computer gaming and medical industries; civil surveyors; and developers of security and geographic information systems
