Indian medical student wins top US award

Chirag Patel, a Houston medical student of Indian origin, will be one of the ten national recipients of the 2005 Lewis Hine Award.

Patel, an MD/PhD student at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center, is being honoured for his determination and commitment to help young people in a broad variety of ways.

He is one of the 10 men and women, volunteers and professionals, selected from hundreds of submissions from across the nation. Each recipient will get a $1,000 prize and a trip to the awards ceremony which will be held on January 31 in New York City.

Previous recipients of this award, administered by the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), include Senator Hillary Clinton, talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, Grammy award winner vocalist and songwriter, Michael Bolton and famous performer Harry Belafonte.
