Major Singh, from Punjab, was awarded death penalty and 11 others have been given life imprisonment after they were found guilty of murdering a co-Indian worker after a drunken brawl in 2009. A Pakistani man was also sentenced to life imprisonment in the case. The identity of the deceased, who belonged to Kerala, was not revealed.
"Major Singh got death sentence in this case while the remaining boys, 11 Indians and 1 Pakistani, got life imprisonment," SP Singh Oberoi, the Dubai-based hotelier who has been pursuing the case on behalf of the Indians told PTI.
According to Oberoi, charges of intentional murder, bootlegging, drinking liquor and hiding a body were upheld by the Dubai Court of First Instance.
Those handed life imprisonment include Sukhjit Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh, Surjit Singh, Manjit Singh, Rashpal Singh, Balwinder Singh, Amarjit Singh, Surinder Singh, Balwinder Singh, Sarabhjit Singh and Pakistani national Mohd Rafat.
The case was under the Jebel Ali police station in Dubai.
The hearing in the case was completed on December 6 last year and the judgment date was fixed for January 3 this year. The judgment was, however, postponed first to February 7 and then to March 14.
