India needs a Muslim Prime Minister: Amar Singh

January 16, 2010 00:34 IST

Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh has said that India needed a Muslim Prime Minister so as to apologise to the community for Babri Masjid demolition.

"For an apology to Muslims, a Muslim Prime Minister is needed," Singh, who recently quit all organisational posts in his party, said while campaigning for party colleague Abu Azmi's son Farhan, who is contesting Bhiwandi assembly by-election in Maharashtra.

After Babri demolition, no Congress leader resigned from their posts, including P Chidambaram, Pranab Mukerjee and Salman Khursheed, he said.

However, after becoming Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh apologised for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, he said.

On the Liberhan Commission report, Singh said he was the first to point out the alleged inaction of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao during the Babri Masjid demolition.

Singh said he now had to look after his family given his health.

"I have been working for the Samajwadi Party for last 20 years selflessly and both my kidneys have been damaged. Now I have become selfish. I have to look after my family and two daughters, Drishti and Disha," he said.

"See the condition of late Andhra Chief Minister Y S Reddy's family after his death. His son has been marginalised. I hate politics," he said.

"Samajwadi Party had 12 general secretaries. I am only an ordinary worker," Singh said.

"I quit on health grounds. I cannot work for 20-20 hours at a stretch now," Singh had said after landing in Mumbai from Dubai on Thursday.

"I came to campaign for Farhan, who is like a son to me," Singh said, adding, "I would have come for him even if he had not contested as an SP candidate."

Singh said he was campaigning despite poor health. "I came here from Dubai, not as a leader, not for politics, but for my son Farhan," Singh said, addressing the campaign rally.

"Abu Azmi will have a right hand and a left hand in assembly after Farhan wins from Bhiwandi. Already, Abdul Rashid Tahir is an MLA from Bhiwandi East. Both will take on MNS chief Raj Thackeray's goons," he said.
