In the latest altercation with the Delhi government, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday cancelled the appointment Aam Aadmi Party’s Swati Maliwal as the chief of the state’s women panel.

Jung has said that the appointment of a new chairperson of the Delhi commission for women is "null and void".

Maliwal, who is the wife of AAP leader Naveen Jaihind, took charge as the DCW chief two days ago.

Swati Maliwal, whose appointment as chief of Delhi Commission for Women has triggered a fresh round of confrontation between Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and the Aam Aadmi Party government on Wednesday said she respects the “constitutionality” of LG’s office and hoped the “minor” issue will be resolved.

Jung on Tuesday rejected Maliwal’s appointment as chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women, saying his approval had not been sought on it.

“I think this is a minor technical glitch because what is being said is that the file (my appointment) was not sent to LG’s office. I think it will get resolved. It is not a very major issue,” she told reporters.

The 30-year-old added, “We totally respect the constitutionality of the LG’s office and will abide by any communication from him.”

“In case, the Delhi government decides to withdraw the notification of my appointment, we will abide by it,” she said, hoping that the LG will give his approval as “my credentials speak for” eligibility for the post.

A Right To Information activist, she is also the youngest member of India Against Corruption.

The 30-year-old replaced Barkha Shukla whose term ended this month.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal drew sharp criticism from the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party for appointing Maliwal as the DCW chief.
