Ayman al-Zawahiri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as the head of the Al Qaeda after the latter was eliminated in a covert US operation in May 2011, is believed to be the mastermind behind some of the worst terrorist attacks in the world, like 9/11, the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the Luxor tourist massacre in Egypt.
Two years ago, he sent a message asking Muslims to kidnap Western tourists visiting Muslim countries.
Last week, al-Zawahiri announced, in a lengthy video posted on the social media outlets: 'A new branch of Al Qaeda was established and is Qaedat al-Jihad in the Indian subcontinent, seeking to raise the flag of jihad, return the Islamic rule, and empowering the Shariah of Allah across the Indian subcontinent,' according to the translation by SITE Intelligence Group.
