A three-member union home ministry team on Thursday raided a trust office at Nagercoil run by S P Udayakumar, who is leading the anti-Kudankulam nuclear plant stir on charges of receiving foreign funding.
The action by Foreign Division (Foreign Contribution Regulation) officials comes in the wake of the charge by minister of state in Prime Minister's Office Narayanaswamy and other Congress leaders that People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy was receiving foreign funds to organise the agitation.
The officials were aided by the Local village administrative officer. The ministry officials had already raided the premises of two NGOs and had frozen their accounts, charging them with acting against public interest.
The several months long anti-Kudankulam agitation had stalled the commissioning of the plant, but work was recently back on track after the Tamil Nadu government gave the green signal.
The organisations, including "Rural Upliftment Centre"and "Good vision" had filed cases at the Madurai bench of Madras high court, seeking quashing of the order.
Udayakumar had earlier refuted Narayanasamy's charge and had even threatened to file a defamation suit against him.
The officials refused to divulge whether any documents had been seized from Udhayakumar's office. But they questioned his wife about the activities of the trust and also handed over a questionnaire seeking replies to a variety of issues.
