A city-based businessman's teenaged son, who is wanted by the police in connection with a hit-and-run incident which killed three persons, surrendered before the juvenile justice court in Chennai on Wednesday and was granted bail.
After his surrender, lawyers of 16-year-old Achal Khemka, son of Natural Energy Processing Company (NEPC) chairman Rajkumar Khemka, applied for bail, which was opposed by the Chennai police.
The police claim they have 'clinching evidence' that he was behind the wheels of a Merecedes Benz that ran over 11 persons sleeping on a footpath in Chennai on December 13, killing two of them and injuring the rest.
The car first collided with a two-wheeler and later ran over the victims. The rider of the two-wheeler also succumbed to his injuries two days later.
A driver of the business house surrendered before the police, claiming he had driven the vehicle and was later released on bail.
On Tuesday, the boy's counsel moved the Madras high court for anticipatory bail. But the high court directed the petitioner to approach the juvenile court for bail, following which the boy surrendered on Wednesday.
