Mumbai: Hit-and-run accused held, released on bail

The son of a corporate honcho was arrested in a hit-and-run case in which a motorcyclist was seriously wounded, while a minor girl was killed and three others injured in two separate road accidents in south Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.

Ankush Shahra (24), son of Dinesh Shahra, managing director of Ruchi Soya, an edible oil major, was arrested after a hot chase by police after his Porsche car allegedly rammed into a motorcycle at Marine Drive in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.

Ankush, who was allegedly drunk, tried to escape in his car, but was chased down after a beat constable and some onlookers alerted the local police station, senior inspector of Marine Drive police station Z M Gajrad told mediapersons.

Ankush was produced before a holiday court the same day and was released on bail while victim Alauddin Imamuddin Haq is admitted to the Bombay Hospital where doctors attending on him said he was recovering "slowly".

He has suffered injuries on his head and legs. In another incident, Shifa, a minor girl was killed and three of her companions injured after the Honda City driven by her cousin's friend hit a road divider and a wall before crashing into a stationary Toyota car on Peddar Road, also in south Mumbai, in the wee hours on Tuesday.

According to police and eyewitness, the impact of the crash was so severe that the Toyota overturned and the victims' Honda City reduced to a heap of twisted metal after it rolled several times over.
