Hazare and his team should contest elections: Digvijay

July 27, 2012 17:36 IST

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Friday welcomed Anna Hazare's indication of floating a new party to fight the 2014 general elections and said the activist and his team should also contest the polls.

"It is a very welcome statement. I welcome it. Anna Hazare should contest. Ramdev, Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Kiran Bedi, everyone should contest election," Singh told reporters while reacting to Hazare's statements.

In a television interview, Hazare yesterday gave an indication in this regard and did not rule the emergence of a 'people's party' in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, saying it is not wrong if candidates selected by the people to fight the poll choose to do so.

"I will travel across the country, tell people to come up with candidates and pick the best out of them. I will then campaign for the candidates.

"We will tell the people who is the best candidate for them after putting the names on the net. We'll ask them if they want to fight as independents or as one party. Let them decide. There's nothing wrong with a new party being formed," he had said.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Prakash Javdekar also said that in a democracy everyone has a right to form a political party. "We are ourselves fighting corruption," he said.

Asked whether the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was not supporting Hazare's agitation this time and could this be a reason for poor gathering in Team Anna's agitation, Javdekar said, "We have already cleared our position".
