Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday said that the officials from state mines and geology department protecting illegal mines, will be dealt with stern punishment.

The CM's comments came in the background of closure of two mines in Cauvrem and Gavnem villages after they were found to be operational without mandatory approval of the state pollution board. The locals had protested against these mines.

"They (officials) will have to follow the directives. And if they don't do so, they will be hanged," Kamat, who also hold charge of mining ministry, told mediapersons in Panaji on Thursday.

The locals had alleged that despite the directives, the mines continue to operate in the villages. Involvement of officers from mines and geology department was suspected in letting these mines operate 'illegally', sources said.

On February 28, the mines department had ordered suspension of mining activity at tribal-dominated Cauvrem. The mine was reportedly working in violation of the provisions under Water and Air pollution Act.

Operation of mine at Gavnem in Sattari taluka was disallowed after local protested against it in the state capital.
