Rajasthan: Gurjars call off agitation

October 10, 2007 15:27 IST

Gurjars in Rajasthan demanding Schedule Tribe status called off their on-going agitation on Wednesday following negotiations with the state government emissaries at the Ajmer Central jail.

"There would be no agitation by the community and all those who are in jail will be released," said K S Bainsla, a top convener of the Gurjar Mahasabha.

Leading the talks on behalf of the government, Bharatiya Janata Party functionary Rampal Jad said that the Gurjar Mahasabha and the government will hold round table meetings on a six point charter of demand.

The fresh demands made by the Gurjars include early completion of the recommendations of the Justice Jasraj Chopra Committee, withdrawal of criminal cases against community members and jobs to the dependents of the 26 people killed in police firing and caste clashes early this year.

The state government had set up the Committee to prepare a status report on the community's inclusion in the ST category after the stir in May-June this year.
