Gujarat: RTI activist attacked, 4 held

June 25, 2011 20:20 IST
Four persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Right To Information activist Bhagubhai Devani in Porbander, police said.

The four -- Lakha Odedara, Jayesh Kaccha, Arjun Parmar and Milan Parmar -- were apprehended late on Saturday night when they were trying to flee from Porbander, they said.

Devani, an advocate by profession, was assaulted near his residence in Rajivnagar yesterday with sharp-edged weapon and sticks. He was seriously injured and admitted to the Civil Hospital.

The police suspect the incident was fallout of the RTI activist's campaign against illegal mining and construction in Porbander. He has filed a writ petition in the Gujarat high court and also complained to Chief Minister Narendra Modi against the construction of a hotel and a multi-storey building in the coastal city.

Devani has accused former Bharatiya Janata Party minister Babhubhai Bokhiriya of orchestrating the attack, a charge denied by the latter.

In July 2010, RTI activist Amit Jethwa was shot dead near the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad. He was campaigning against alleged illegal mining in the Gir Sanctuary areas.
