A team of officials from the Gujarat anti-terrorism squad and the directorate of forensic science, Gandhinagar, has reached Varanasi to study Tuesday's blast at the Dashashwamedh ghat.

The ATS team is led by its chief Ajay Tomar and consists of a few other members. "We have already reached Varanasi. Our purpose is to study the blast site and provide inputs to the investigating agencies if necessary," Tomar told PTI over phone from Varanasi.

A team consisting of forensic science experts from the DFS has also left for Varanasi, its director J M Vyas said. "Out team would study the blast, its nature, explosives used, the intensity, and also help the Uttar Pradesh police in investigation if asked for," Vyas said.

According to investigating agencies, terror outfit Indian Mujaheedin was responsible for the blast, which left an infant dead and 36 others injured.

Following the blast, an alert has been sounded across UP and all security agencies are on their toes with increased checking of vehicles. Patrolling has also been increased in sensitive parts of the state to avoid any untoward incident.
