Gopinath Munde's ashes immersed in Godavari

The ashes of Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former union minister Gopinath Munde were on Sunday immersed in the Godavari river.

Local BJP MLA Girish Mahajan immersed the ashes of Munde, who died in a road accident on June 3 in New Delhi.Mahajan, along with other leaders of BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS immersed the ashes at the ‘ramkund’, located on the banks of river Godavari, after performing rituals in the morning, city BJP chief Laxman Savaji said.

The ashes were brought from Beed on Saturday late evening and were kept at the BJP office, where large number of people gathered to pay tribute to the veteran leader, he said.

On Sunday, the ashes were kept at the city’s V N Naik education society’s premises in morning for darshan and later it was taken in a procession for immersion, Savaji added.

Earlier, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis handed over the urns containing ashes to district BJP presidents at a solemn function at the party office in south Mumbai.

The ashes would also be immersed in various rivers and holy places, including Harihareshwar, Narsobachi Wadi, at the confluence between Krishna and Koyna rivers, Pandharpur, Manjara river near Latur and at Godavari sangam at Nanded.
