The Maharashtra Congress on Saturday termed as a "miserable failure" the leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari, while accusing the saffron party of being "desperate" for power.

The pointed remark came a day after the conclusion of the two-day BJP national executive meeting in Mumbai, which re-elected Gadkari as the party president for the second term.

"Under your leadership, the BJP has miserably failed to play its role as a responsible opposition party," Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Sachin Sawant said in a letter to BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

Accusing the BJP of being "power hungry", Sawant said, "To achieve this objective, the BJP is attempting to create unrest and doubts against the government, by painting an exaggerated picture which is far from the reality. Such attempts may give you (BJP)  temporary satisfaction. But the party's credibility does not improve".

"The country is passing through a difficult economic situation. Such crises exists in countries in Europe as well as the United States.  Everybody there came together to strengthen the hands of the heads of the government to overcome the crises. Unfortunately, this does not happen in India," Sawant said.

He further said that the BJP's opposition to United Progressive Alliance's policies revolved around the fact that it does not want the Congress to succeed even if national interest is not served.

Without taking names, the spokesperson said, "There is still two years before the general elections but the struggle for PM's post has begun in your party."
