"India is greatly encouraged by this unified expression and support of solidarity by all major countries of the world," the prime minister said. The world community also shared India's concern for energy security in view of the "growing instability and unpredictability" of oil prices, he said.
He noted that when he embarked upon his three-day trip to St Petersburg in Russia on Sunday to attend the G-8 Summit, two things were "uppermost" in his mind. These were to sensitise the international community about India's plight in the wake of terrible terrorist acts in Mumbai and Srinagar on last Tuesday and to discuss with world leaders matters relating to providing energy security in view of uprecedented instability and unpredictability of oil prices.
"I am glad to state that our concerns were universally shared," he told reporters at the Palam technical airport on his arrival after the visit during which he attended the G-8 Summit and met leaders including US President George W Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The G-8 comprises the US, Britain, Germany, Russia, France, Italy, Japan and Canada. The Outreach countries invited for the Summit were India, China, Brazil, Mexico, South Afria and Congo.
The prime minister said the G-8 countries and five outreach countries expressed outrage at the barbaric terrorist attacks of July 11 in Mumbai and Srinagar and expressed solidarity with India. "They expressed their readiness to undertake all necessary measures to bring to justice perpetrators, organisers, sponsors of these and other terrorist acts (against India) and those who incite terrorists to commit them," Singh said.
He said there was "strong commitment that the world community must get together to bring to justice those who perpetrate the crimes" of terrorism. On the issue of energy security, he said he had "useful discussions" with the G-8 and Outreach countries on how to deal with the "growing instability and unpredictabiilty" with regard to oil price. Singh said India's concerns were shared by the international community on all issues.
