Joining leaders from the US, United Kingdom and other countries, French President Jacques Chirac has congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his assumption of office and invited him to visit Paris.
In a message to the prime minister, Chirac said the recent elections demonstrated the extraordinary strength of Indian democracy. They also reflected the deep attachment of the Indian people for secular values, which France particularly cherished.
The promotion of a balanced international order respecting human rights, strengthening dialogue between cultures and supporting an equitable sustainable development are some of the common objectives.
"In these uncertain times for the international community, the need for France and India to combine efforts in this direction is more relevant than ever," Chirac said.
Observing that the two countries have developed a steady partnership in the political, economic, cultural and strategic fields, he assured Singh of his resolve to work together to strengthen it.
"In this regard, I would be happy to welcome you in Paris as soon as you schedule permits," Chirac said while wishing Singh success in his new assignment.
Meanwhile, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi has greeted her Indian counterpart K Natwar Singh on his assumption of office. She said both countries have a significant role to play in shaping the future of Asia and beyond.
