At least five people, including four police personnel, were killed in three explosions that rocked Pakistan's Peshawar city on Thursday.

In their first blast, the saboteurs targeted a police van passing through Lahori Chowk of Peshawar, killing four police personnel and a minor and injuring several others. The wounded persons and the dead bodies have been shifted to the nearby Lady Reading Hospital.

According to police sources, 8 kg of explosives were employed in the blast, which was so powerful that it was heard far and wide and windowpanes of the nearby buildings were smashed.

The police announced high alert following the incident and started snap checking at several points in the city. Later on, two women suicide bombers blew themselves up at Circular Road in the city, Samaa TV reports.

Over 4,500 people have been killed in suicide attacks and bomb blasts- many of them carried out by the Taliban and other Al Qaeda-linked extremists- in Pakistan during the last four years.
