A five-day old newborn died in the Jalandhar Civil Hospital after the doctors allegedly took her off life-support because her parents could not pay Rs 200.

The baby was born premature on July 20
and had to be kept in an incubator. On Wednesday, the hospital told the baby's father, who works as a painter, to pay electricity charges to run the incubator.

He failed to pay the sum and the child was taken of the incubator. Soon after, she died.

The hospital has refused to take responsibility for the infant's death but has ordered an internal probe.

The hospital in its defence says the baby was born premature and had very little chances of survival.
