Tsunami-hit fishermen offer catch for free

April 13, 2005 15:41 IST

The fishermen of Pattinacherri village in Karaikal in Pondicherry were one of the worst affected by the December 26 tsunami, forcing them to stay away from sea for over about four months.

On Monday, they resumed their fishing activity, and their day proved to be very good, as they got a sizeable catch. And when they returned to the shore on Tuesday, they did not forget the locals who had come to their rescue during the disaster.

As an act of thanksgiving, the fishermen carried the fish to villages like Kilinjalmedu, Karaikalmedu and other areas and distributed their entire catch to the locals, and that too for free.

Though Pondicherry Chief Minister N Rengasami had formally inaugurated the fishing activities two weeks back, the summer rains had prevented the fisher folk from venturing into the sea.
