The European Union delegation led by British Prime Minister Tony Blair called on President A P J Abdul Kalam on Wednesday and shared its view that a new direction has to be given in energy cooperation for development of alternate sources of energy.

During a 30-minute meeting with Blair, who was accompanied by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and other members, Kalam emphasised the need for more cooperation at the University level and higher education as also academic exchange programme involving professors from each other's country, Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman S M Khan said.

The President highlighted the need for lap-to-lap direct contacts between scientisits from two sides for research and innovations, Khan said.

Kalam stressed on intensifying cooperation between India and EU in solar and nuclear power and bio-fuel sectors. Blair and Jose enquired about the functioning of educational sector in India and the large number of scientific personnel working abroad.
