A reshuffle of Indian envoys to various countries is on the cards following election of India's high commissioner to the United Kingdom Kamlesh Sharma as the Commonwealth secretary-general.
The government on Monday announced the appointment of Jayant Prasad, India's permanent representative in Geneva, as the next ambassador to Afghanistan.
The 1976-batch IFS officer will succeed Rakesh Sood, the external affairs ministry said.
Sood is tipped to be posted to Nepal but the agreement is yet to be firmed up, sources said.
Sood is expected to succeed Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, who is tipped to replace Sharma in London.
