An Indian sentenced to death for killing his Indonesian lover could get a prison term instead, if the victim's family accepts a monetary compensation and gives up the right to death penalty.
The Criminal Appeal Court in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has said if the victim's relatives accept the Dh 100,000 ($27,224) compensation and give up their right to death penalty, the court would commute the capital punishment of the Indian identified as Johny to a prison term.
The court on Friday sent a letter to the Indonesian Embassy asking the address and contact numbers of the dead woman's family.
The court demanded that a representative of the victim's family appears in court after the Indian appealed against the death sentence and his lawyer requested the court to summon a representative of the victim, Gulf News reported.
