In the biggest drug haul in the capital, Delhi Police has seized a huge consignment of a banned chemical worth Rs 200 crore in the international market and arrested one person in this connection.

About 4,400 kg of Methaqualone, popularly known as mandrax, were seized from a godown in Badarpur locality near Delhi-Haryana border in South Delhi during a raid on Sunday. The contraband, meant for an US customer, was kept in gunny bags of 20 kg each.

The seizure came after the arrest of one Vinod Sharma, who police suspect was a member of an international drug cartel operating in India, a senior police official told PTI.

According to police, they had cracked a racket involved in

smuggling of expensive carpets to foreign countries in July and arrested some persons in this connection. The investigation in that case found that the accused were also involved in narcotics smuggling and led to the unearthing of this drug network. Their modus operandi was to send huge quantities of drugs in containers.

This is the largest seizure of its kind in the capital in the recent times, the official said, adding Sharma's interrogation is on and police is hopeful to gather more information from him on the operations of the drug network.

Last week in another case, police had seized 100 kg of ephedrine bound for the US and arrested four members of a trans-national drug cartel operating in north India.
