An Indian doctor who worked with Mohamed Haneef at an Australian hospital and was interrogated by police in connection with the failed UK terror plot earlier this month has been suspended for allegedly faking about his employment history.

Queensland Health director general Uschi Schreiber last night said Indian national Mohammed Asif Ali, 26, had been suspended without pay from the Gold Coast Hospital on information received from Queensland Police.

Ali was suspended on Friday evening, around the same time Haneef was freed from Wolsten Correctional Centre after a terrorism charge against him was dropped.

The information did not relate to terrorism allegations, but the matter had been referred to the Crime and Misconduct Commission and the Queensland Medical Board, Schreiber said.

The Courier-Mail newspaper reported Ali had been suspended after it was discovered his resume included up to 12 months of hospital work in India that he never performed.

At the time of his supposed employment, Ali was attending to family problems and had taken time off. But it said his medical qualifications were not in doubt, and Ali was still described as being a competent doctor.

Ali graduated from India's Mysore University in 2001.

He was taken into AFP custody shortly after Haneef was arrested on July 2, but was released following questioning about the failed UK terrorist plot.

Following his release, AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said there was nothing to suggest Ali had committed a crime and he was free to return into the community.

The doctors were both recruited from Liverpool in England and sponsored on 457 work visas by Queensland Health.
