The Bharatiya Janata Party has won the municipal elections in Delhi on Saturday, having crossed simple majority figure of 137 in the 272-member civic body.
According to the final tally, the BJP has won 164 seats, Congress 69, Independents 16, BSP 15 and the NCP, JMM, LJP and INLD won two each.
Capitalising on the public anger against the sealing and demolition drives, the BJP has dealt a severe blow to the ruling Congress.
Buoyed by victorious outcome, the party said it will make Delhi a 'world class' capital.
"The party will live up to the expectations of the people of Delhi and ensure that they get a responsible and responsive government," national president Rajnath Singh said.
"The party will solve all their problems and make the city a world class capital," Singh added.
Patting the back of Delhi BJP leaders, Singh said party's victory is a clear indication of the complete rejection by the people of Delhi of the so-called 'aam aadmi' policies of the Congress, which are nothing more than 'hollow promises' used only for 'electoral posturing'.
"Under the Congress Party, the people of Delhi have been severely impacted by poor governance and anti-people policies including unprecedented price rise of every essential commodity," Singh said.
"There has been lack of proper civic amenities such as good quality roads, sewerage, garbage collection and above all high levels of corruption," he said.
The BJP president said with this result, the citizens of Delhi have not only conclusively rejected the policies of the Congress but are also taking the lead in indicating the future trend of electoral results expected across the country.
The prominent faces who won include Mayor Farhad Suri, standing committee chairman J K Sharma, former Mayor Satbir Singh (Cong), Opposition leader Subhash Arya, BJP standing committee member Vijender Gupta and former Deputy Mayor Arti Mehra of the BJP.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit accepted the defeat, but attacked her bete noire and Congress chief Rambabu Sharma for the humiliating defeat and called for introspection on the reasons behind the poll debacle.
Sharma, on the other hand, attributed the defeat mainly to the sealing drive. He said the rising prices also played a role in the elections.
An upbeat BJP Delhi unit chief Harsh Vardhan described the election victory a referendum on Dikshit government's performance and sought her resignation.
